Construction Toys

There are a number of construction toys available for children of all ages. Common versions of these toys include Legos, Tinker Toys, Erector sets, Tomy Constructables, and more.

Today, construction sets are available which allow children (with helpful directions) to create anything from a model car to a model roller coaster. These toys require patience and practice, but can be very rewarding when the end result is achieved successfully. Furthermore, they provide great practice for problem-solving skills that will be needed later.

Generally construction toys and sets come with a suggested age range on the box, which can be very helpful. There are simple blocks available for young children, as well as more complex models for the experienced builder.

For older children, these toy sets can be fairly advanced—not necessarily in difficulty (though they can be increasingly challenging as well), but in technology. Some kits allow preteen children to mix mortar in a miniature wheelbarrow, for example, and then follow the steps to build a small brick structure. These are designed to dissolve in water, meaning the child can then start over and build something new.

Construction kits also exist which are designed to teach in other subjects. For example, kits of “bone” blocks which the child aligns to build an animal skeleton. Depending on the interests of your child, there should be something available for most personalities.
